In September 2018 we decided to add Kune Kune ( Coo-ney Coo-ney) pigs to BuckleBerry Farm. While we had considered adding other breeds we decided the gentle, easy going, calm nature of the Kune Kunes fit best with our farm. Originating from New Zealand and once considered at risk of extinction the Kune Kunes were eventually imported into the United States where they have become a popular homestead pig.
KuneKunes, while not considered mini pigs are much smaller than most domestic pigs. They vary in weight between 150-350 lbs once matured. Also known as the pug of pigs, Kunes are known for their lack of rooting and fence testing abilities. They have a shorter turned up snout giving them a unique appearance while preventing rooting. Kune Kunes are raised for meat but considered Lard pigs. Their diet consists of mostly pasture and hay making them an affordable and healthy option for raising and producing your own pork.
Our Kune Kunes are not registered. We decided against registered stock as the market in our area is not willing to pay registered stock prices, especially on animals they intend to raise for slaughter or as house pets. If your interested in registered Kune Kunes we would be happy to put you in touch with local breeders who raise papered pigs.
